I chose Mathematics, however, if someone is interested in another topic I am game for making more questions.
1) When do you use addition and subtraction outside of school? 2) Why is matching/patterns important? 3) Where do you see statistics being used in the real world?
1. What math would be used to build a house? 2. How would fractions be used in baking for a large party? 3. What would be the amount of money needed to survive 1 month including all expenses such as groceries, water, rent, utilities, etc? 4. What math concepts can be generated while looking at a map?
1. What would you need to know to run a lemonade stand? Such as how much money should you start with, how can you make change, what price would you charge for each drink? 2. Pick a location: Blacksburg, Christiansburg, or Roanoke. How long would it take you to travel to your destination and back to school? Think of distance and speed limit. 3. Plan a trip to Europe. How much money would you need (think of airfare, sleeping arrangements, food, and leisure activities) to bring with you? What is the exchange rate for the county you are traveling to?
I'm actually doing some of this for a 5th grade activity book for the Selu Farmhouse and tour (I work in Appalachian Studies this semester). Mine are more practical farm questions so bear with me. 1. If you're buying a new floor (carpet, wood floors, linoleum) what is the area of the room? How much would that floor cost if you need x amount at y price? What type of floor would be the best buy? Which would you chose? Why? 2. Hay/ feed calculations. If one round bail of hay feeds your animals for one week how many hay bails would you need to feed your animals for the entire year? Or in another way if x square bails = y round bails how many square bails do you have? What could you do if you didn't have enough hay or if you had too much hay? 3. Plan your budget. If you need to buy fabric, dry goods, seeds from the mercantile store (or walmart now ha) with only $100 how many different ways can you purchase those items? 4. iIf you have $20 how many ways could you break it down? (20-$1, 2-$10, 3-$5 & 5-$1). How could this skill be useful on/off the farm? (Paying help, help save money etc.) 5. When you shop for clothes you find a pair of shoes that you like. One is $40 but 60% off and the other is $20 and 5% off. You have money for one pair but not both. Which pair is cheaper? Which pair is more expensive? What else do you consider? (size, name brand, type of shoe).Which pair do you buy? Why?
